Sophia is a central term in Hellenistic philosophy and religion, Platonism, Gnosticism, Orthodox Christianity, Esoteric Christianity, as well as Christian mysticism. Sophiology is a philosophical concept regarding wisdom, as well as a theological concept regarding the wisdom of God. God, love, and wisdom are all central to mainline denominations.
So, what’s wrong with the picture of life today?
Could it be that most religions have taken off on their own journey, thought that they were wise in their own ways (after all isn’t that what the EGO does?), and created. Jesus, the Christos didn’t come to start yet another religion. Paul and early church fathers did that. Jesus said that God was LOVE and went about modeling such.
So, where are we today?
Tom Harpur writes, “Even at present, hatred toward Jews, homosexuals, Muslims, and others is still being encouraged in some quarters by extreme biblical literalists. We will never have peace on earth as long as literalism controls religions.” It’s not just Christianity. Islam and Judaism both have their fervent fundamentalist block of believers.
Fervency isn’t always beneficial.
Wisdom is generally a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, which empowers and gives the ability to choose or act to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time and energy. Wisdom is a product of a lot of missteps. If Jesus pointed us in any direction it was in the direction of love and wisdom.
We seem to be lacking in both areas but there’s still time to turn things around before we do ourselves in with hatred and ignorance: especially the ignorance of thinking that we’re separated from others. We aren’t. We are ONE!
